Totally Tubular Tuesday: Analysis, Signposts, Cause & Effect...

 Hola Damas y Caballeros,
Today is Tuesday, February 7, 2017.  So far, most of our focus has been on cause-and-effect relationships. We have seen the cause-and-effect in organizational structure and in history. We have also seen cause-and-effect in the compass learning modules that we have been working on together. For those that did not hear yesterday, the compass learning for the week is called Cause/Effect 3rd Try. Please make sure that you are staying up-to-date on your compass learning modules.  There are some that are missing assignments, and I cannot grade what I don't have.

Which brings me to my next point. We have been looking at signposts again due to our new novel The Outsiders.  So far we've read to about chapter 4, and there is a lot happening in the story at this point. If you haven't noticed, I have not been doing much instruction or teaching of the signposts. In terms of the learning process, we are in the "you do I help" stage. Most of you, not all of you, but most of you are showing a certain level of mastery of the signposts. What this means is that you can read text, identify signpost, and analyze the signpost in which you have read. This is exactly what I have tried to set out and teach you from the very beginning. Those people that feel they grasp finding signposts I am extremely proud of you. For those people who still struggle to find signposts or understand what analysis is when we read, I hope you'll keep trying. Then, there are some that just don't care either way so, good luck.

I'd like to mention one of the signpost in particular. I'd like to focus on contrast and contradiction. Now that we know or have a sense of who our characters are in the outsiders we can start to analyze or pick a part who they are and how they act. Once we know who they are and how they act this is when we can start to find contrast and contradiction.  In chapter 2, we see a contrast and contradiction when Johnny stands up to Dally and when Dally refuses to beat up Johnny. In chapter 3 we see a contrast and contradictions when Darry loses his temper with Ponyboy. Lastly, in chapter 4 we're going to turn back to Johnny's and find another contrast and contradiction when the boys coming to contact with a group of Socs. It is my hope that you see that contrast and contradiction is one great way to analyze characters.

Think back to what you know about analysis.  Analysis means that we separate, isolate, and recombine information that we read, watch, or think about. We are doing analysis in both English and Social Studies. Our analysis in social studies isn't contrast and contradiction, but it is looking at cause-and-effect.  When we read and reread strategically this is also a kind of analysis. When we read the first time is for the gist, the second is for information, and the third is for understanding.  Each time we read or reread a text, our purpose and target are different.  As we read, learn, and analyze together today, let's keep this in mind.  Have fun and enjoy!

Love, peace, and taco grease,
