Welcome to Thinkspot Kiddies,
Today is Friday,
January 5, 2018. For some of you this is a welcome back. Thinkspot is a
blog I started in 2010 when I was teaching fifth grade. It is a place
where I usually post links, write about previous learning, plans for the
future, and any news in general for the class. I usually post once a
week usually on a Monday or Friday. There are some weeks where I will
have a second post but usually it is once a week.
The links I
post on Thinkspot are usually links that connect directly to the
learning and instruction that are going on in the classroom. For
example, today's link is a link to a Google doc
we are going to use for the Mind Field. Before we left for winter break
we watched the first episode in Mind Field that had to do with The
Greater Good. We then took that episode and analyzed it. We separated
the episode into parts and isolated specific parts of the episode. We
were looking for the thesis, the evidence, and the conclusion that
Michael Stevens was including in the video. We are going to do the same
thing with this video.
Think back to previous learning.We know that a thesis has three parts a
subject, a context, and a claim. We know that a good writer presents
the subject to the audience in an introduction usually by using a hook
or attention grabber. This is then followed up by background
information or context. Context gives the audience information on the
subject or topic the writer is writing about. It could be a
summarization. It could be historical information. It could be a list of
facts. Or, it could be a chronological timeline. The last part of the
thesis is usually a claim or statement of purpose. This is the writers
position or statement that the writer will show with evidence later than
in the body paragraphs.
From the thesis (subject, context,
claim), the writer then moves on to the body paragraphs that contain
most of the information with evidence, examples, transitions, and
reasoning which back up the claim that was stated in the thesis. From there,
the writer then provides a compelling conclusion. For today I just want
you to focus on how Michael Stevens introduces the ideas he's going to
present later in the video. Basically, I want you to identify his
