Speeches: Celebs have a voice too...

  Hey Kenosha Kiddies,

Today is Wednesday, January 20, 2016.  Over the next week and a half we will be engaging in a task together.  The task is to write and deliver a commencement speech for your 8th grade graduation.  Some of this task is imaginary.  None of us will be graduating from Mahone Middle School this coming June.  Some is real life.  The part that is real life can be and should be important to you.  What do you want to say about your time here at Mahone?  What do you want to say about your future in high school?  What do you want to say to your friends, teachers, coaches, and parents?  If you are able to think of life after high school, what are some things you want to think about?

These questions are to get you started.  Once you begin to answer some of these questions, then you will begin to discover YOUR VOICE.  Your voice, as a writer, is part of who you are.  What are you trying to say?  What message are you trying to share?  Think back to our work on CENTRAL IDEAS and CENTRAL MESSAGES.  Central ideas are shown to us by patterns that keep coming back up over and over again.  When we find patterns, these patterns point us towards a central idea.  We will be starting here today as we look at a couple of speeches given by people we may know.  Below, you will find the links to the speeches for the day.

Steve Jobs

J.K. Rowling

Let's see if we can find their central ideas and begin to discover the central messages we can pull from their words of wisdom.  Good luck, and happy hunting!
