Welcome Back: Text Structures, Central Ideas, CC's, and more...

Happy Tuesday Y'all,

Today is Tuesday, January 3, 2017.  I always love the beginning of a new year.  It feels so fresh and rejuvenating!  This morning we will be meeting in our Community Circle to kick start a new beginning here in Persian House.  Let's share the highlights of our holidays and time off.  Also this morning I have an unusual Vsauce for you as well as an overview of your Compass Learning for the week.  Our Vsauce asks the question, "What Does Human Taste Like?"  If time allows, the minilesson we will be focusing attention on this week is Central Idea.  When writers sit down to construct a piece of writing they write with a central idea in mind.  We are familiar with the central idea because the central idea is similar to a thesis.

Think back to before the break.  Remember that a thesis has three parts: subject, context, claim.  By now, claims should be a familiar concept.  A good claim follows some simple rules.  Claims are always statements; never questions.  Claims take a position or inform an audience.  Lastly, claims usually answer a question.  A thesis almost always contains a claim that the writer supports with information on the subject and within a certain context.  We all wrote a thesis after we finished Esperanze Rising.  Most of you did a fantastic job.

Here is our RAFTS prompt to kick-off 2017...
