CONFERENCE WEEK: Finish Centers, Mind Field, Athens, & Sparta...

Today is Monday, February 20, 2017.  Conferences are this week Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.  We only have 4 full academic days this week due to those conferences so let's try to do our best.  Last week we started working on a Setting Analysis Project of the 1960's.  We also concluded our week with our centers.  We ran out of time and missed a center on Friday, which means we will be finishing that last center today in class.  Some of the RAFTS quizzes look absolutely brilliant!  The Setting Analysis Projects look like they are progressing nicely as well.  From what I saw in the center I was leading on Compass Learning many of you seem to be grasping theme better than before  Lastly, I hope by now with the practice you have done, that organizational structure in nonfiction text makes more sense to you now than before.

It is the hope of your humble English and Social Studies teacher that you all are beginning to see that the organizational structures we have learned about in English are also popping up in Social Studies.  One example I can bring up to you now is the Cause & Effect structure we all read when studying the Persian War.  We also tried to look at the battles of the Persian War from an Order/Sequence perspective in our 4-column notes.  Now, for this week, we will look at history from a Compare & Contrast point of view.  The Thinking Like A Historian (TLH) category we will use will be TE (Through Their Eyes).  We will be comparing and contrasting the beliefs and values of Athens to those of Sparta.  In doing so, we will hopefully be able to draw a conclusion as to what led Athens & Sparta (two former allies) to fight each other to the point of their own destruction.

Last, but certainly not least, we have our Mind Field for the week.  I've decided to continue as close to sequential order as I can with the Artificial Intelligence episode.  This is episode 4 in the Mind Field series on YouTube Red.  In this episode, Michael Stevens interviews a gentleman who says he is in love with an AI entity, he postulates the possibilities of a relationship with AI, and even sets up a fake dating show to see if a real person will select an AI entity as a potential date.  I hope you are all enjoying this series as much as I am.  Your teacher values your interest and engagement.  As always, have fun and enjoy!

Love, Peace, and Taco Grease,

Daddy C

P.S. The task is not to see what no-one yet has seen, but to think what no-one has yet thought about that which everybody sees.
