Tuesday: Compass Learning, Monkeys, Grapes, and More...

Happy Tuesday Kenosha Kiddies,

Today is Tuesday, November 15, 2016.  One last reminder to figure out your Compass Learning situation.  This week is all about inferences.  Therefore, your Compass Learning Assignments are on inferences and drawing conclusions.  Again, there are a few students who have not finished last week's Compass Learning on plot.  "Plot 1" was the assignment last week.  All of your Compass Learning assignments are due this Friday so I hope you take them seriously and do your best.

This week's TED Talk is kind of long, but I hope that you find it interesting.  It actually is mentioned in the "Inference 1" in your Compass Learning assignment.  It is about animal behavior and how some researchers may have discovered that some animals understand "fairness".  Anytime something naturally occurs in the wild I am fascinated.  I hope you are as well.  We probably will not get a chance to view it today in class, but we will probably get to view it as a center this Thursday.

On a final note, I have been promising another RAFTS writing opportunity.   The RAFTS writing for today is directly connected to events that are taking place in Esperanza Rising. Esperanza and her family are faced with a heart-wrenching decision.  Most of their things were lost in the fire, but now they may have to leave Aguascalientes forever.  Below is the RAFTS writing for today.  Have fun and enjoy!

Monday: Compass Learning, Farts, and Inferences...

Happy Monday Gang,

Image result for COmpass learning      Today is Monday, November 13, 2016.  Your 3-day weekends must have been awesome with lots of fun events to share in Community Circle today.  I had a fun weekend too that I can't wait to share with all of you.  This week, I would like to stress that your homework/assignment for the week is assigned on Compass Learning.  Some of you need to complete the learning module from last week on Plot.  Last week's assignment is titled "PLOT 1".  If you did poorly on the first quiz and are ready for a retake, then that module is titled "PLOT 2 QUIZ".  Those of you reading this who are rockstars and would  like some extra credit points, please feel free to do "Plot 2". This week's assignments are all on inferences and drawing conclusions about what we read.  This week's modules are assigned as "Inferences 1" and "Inferences 2".

Making an inference based on what we read is a vital skill that all proficient and expert readers do when reading and after they are finished reading.  Sometimes, in order to make an inference, we must reread the text or a part of the text to gain a better understanding of the information.  This goes for both fiction and nonfiction genres.  Please remember that the #1 reading comprehension strategy that helps 7th graders goes unused by many students.  The #1 reading comprehension strategy that helps 7th graders is RE-READING!  Expert and proficient readers usually read a text through once to get the gist, then a second time to get specific information.  Expert readers will even reread a 3rd time to get a deep understanding of what was read and how to apply it.

Time to get off the toilet,
Mr. C
P.S. This week's Vsauce is brought to us by "Farts".  The more you know...
