The Cause: Documentary...

It's Thursday,

The Civil War began at 4:30 a.m. on April 12, 1861.  The documentary you will see today does a fabulous job connecting to the articles we have read together.  Listen for "Bleeding Kansas".  Listen for Dred Scot.  Listen for dates, people, turning points, and events our articles may have mentioned.

Below, you will see two questions.  Your task, at the end of class today, is to comment on this blog by answering these questions.  You ARE NOT using the blackboard blogs!!  You are commenting on this blog.  I will receive your post in my personal email account and approve or disapprove your responses.

1. What did you see or hear in the documentary that we read about in the articles?

2. At this point in all of our reading, writing, talking, sharing, and studying, what do YOU think could be considered a cause of the Civil War?

“Slavery is like holding a wolf by the ears.  You don’t like it, but you dare not let it go.”
-Thomas Jefferson
“For me, the picture of the Civil War, as a historic phenomenon, is not on the battlefield.  It’s not about weapons.  It’s not about soldiers except to the extent that weapons and soldiers at that crucial moment joined the discussion about something higher about humanity, about human dignity, about human FREEDOM”
-Barbara Fields (Historian 9:10)
“If there was a single event that caused the war it was the establishment of the United States in independence from Great Britain with slavery still a part of its heritage.”
-Barbara Fields (Historian 17:00)
Today's learning targets:
I can identify main ideas, analyze supporting details, and evaluate inferences within discipline specific media.
I can apply content in order to evaluate relationships of people and ideas and to draw conclusions.

1.some of the things i heard from our articles in the doucumentary were bleeding kansas, dredd scott, the kansas-nebraska act, and many many more.
2.one of the causes of the civil war was that the union in the north didn't want slavery, they didn't need it, they didn't like it, and they wanted it to stop, while the confedderacy in the south wanted slavery, they needed it, they liked it, and they didn't want it to stop, so that is what i think could be considered a cause of the civil war.

1.I heard that they talked about the Kansas Nebraska act very quickly because they mentioned the "bleeding Kansas" and how it was one of the main events that led up to the War.

2.The one thing that caused the Civil War was that the establish ment of the united states and that we got our independences from great brittan and that we kept slavery. I alos think that anouther cause is that americans were not able to compromise with eachother which caused disagreements which the disagreements caused arguments.

2. i think the south had ade th north mad and had attacked them. but i don't think slavery was the only reason. but from what im hearing the causes are all linked to slavery.

1. In the media I heard them talk about the Kansas Nebraska act because they talked about "Bleeding Kansas" about how it was a riot that broke out in Kansas because there was a huge fight about the weather Kansas should be a slave state or a free state and we read about this in the articles.

2. One of the causes or events of the war was when we got our independence from great britain we still kept slavery. After we got our independence we should have gotten rid of it. Another reason is Americans were not able to compromise they were unreasonable people they only wanted to listen to things they wanted to hear. This could have lead to many arguments and conflicts because people believed in different things. Some believed that whites were superior to blacks and some believed people were created equal. Because of this, this lead to many conflicts in the United States.

1. What did you see or hear in the documentary that we read about in the articles?
I heard the documentary talk about how bull run was the first major battle of the civil war. This was the effect of everything that we have been reading about in the articles such as the Dred Scott decision and "Bleeding Kansas." I also heard that the civil war took place in more than 10,000 different areas, from New Mexico to Florida. This was also a similar outcome of different opinions by people of the north and the south. I also heard that a dispute over the states rights led to a bloody battle between north and south. This is similar to all the conflicts that we read about in the articles like the 3/5 compromise and the Missouri compromise.
2. At this point in all of our reading, writing, talking, sharing, and studying, what do YOU think could be considered a cause of the Civil War?
I believe that a main cause of of the civil war was the immense diversity between the Northern States and the Southern States. The states of the north was mainly industrial and were creating large factories, while in the south, they had mainly farmers and plantations that were in high demand for things like cotton. People of the north didn't need slaves to do the work while people of the south needed slaves to work to keep up with the high demand of the produced goods. The south was so much more diverse than the north, it wasn't a surprise that they couldn't connect. This disconnection would have most likely led up to some sort of battle that people of the south didn't get what they want and vise-versa.

2. At this point in all of our reading, writing, talking, sharing, and studying, what do YOU think could be considered a cause of the Civil War?
- Many people settling in America needed to grow crops to make money and/or feed their own families. Many wealthy land or crop-owners didn't beleive that they were fit to work in their own fields, tending to their own crops. This is where slaves came in. There were some who thought it was necessary to have slaves but also, thought it was very wrong. There were some who thought it was nessesary and thought there was nothing wrong with slavery because blacks weren't thouhgt of people anyway. There were people who disagreed with slavery all together. I think these are the differences that segregated America and caused our own people to turn on each other.

1. What did you see or hear in the documentary that we read about in the articles?

I heard many things that were either in our article or had to do with our article. Such were the battle of Shiloh, 75th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, abolitionists, Frederic Douglas, slavery, Henry Adams, not allowing the freedom of Dred Scott, allowing the Kansas-Nebraska Area to make their own choice as to become a slave state or not, James Buchanan, the union, John Wilkes Booth (the killer of Abraham Lincoln), Confederates, Abraham Lincoln and secession.

2. At this point in all of our reading, writing, talking, sharing, and studying, what do YOU think could be considered a cause of the Civil War? 1861

I think that a main cause of the Civil War was the start of the United States with slaves brought with it, having to be dealt with later on. It began with the indentures servants. With the southern states wanting free labor in their fields. From pure greed, the southerners thought that the indentures servants were too short term to be of any use, and you even had to feed them! This led to the southern states looking for free labor; slaves. The entire Civil War was about the issue of slavery, mostly African slavery, but it was also about the once united states looking for their peace again. As Lincoln said, the civil war was basically a transition to a new beginning of freedom in America.

Ami Leigh said...

1. They talked about how Southerners were concerned about the growing economy of the North but they didn't know any other way to work against it except slavery. Kansas-Nebraska Act was talked about in that many people rushed to Kansas in order to set their footing in the state-hopefully so that it will either become a slave or non-slave state, wherever their belief stood.
2.I think the cause of the Civil War is the division of worldviews on slavery. With the North so firmly against slavery and the South so firmly fighting to keep it, it was hard to find a compromise to accomodate both sides. Also after the South had seceeded from the Union, war was inevitable if the US wanted to stay a strong and stable country. I also think that both parties wanted to protect their dignity and pride - they could not let their beliefs be crushed by those who thought differently from them. I also think that the presence of religion may the people fight harder because they believed it was right and that God wanted them to fight for what they believed the Bible told them to do.

Keegan Ehler said...

1. One thing that really touched me was the fear of slavery moving west, but it never moved west, because the war started. Also, bleeding Kansas, which was really the first battle, kind of. It was really just pro-slavery southerners trying to take over Kansas to start.
2. I believe the greatest cause of the civil war is all of the little issues about slavery and rights compiling into one angry burst which is the civil war.

Dread Scott case, Bleeding Kanas, Kanas and Nebraska act, and Jefferson Davis who was the president of the south.

2. At this point in all of our reading, writing, talking, sharing, and studying, what do YOU think could be considered a cause of the Civil War?

I think that the Civil War was caused by slavery because we always wanted slaves either if we had them or just talked about them. The north and south couldn’t compromise so the Civil War broke out. From reading articles I can see why the slaves were so important in the south for labor but I don’t think humans should be treated like property. The north and south had very different views of slavery and both sides thought they were right. It amazes me that America couldn’t compromise like we had done with our government or deciding whether a state was a slave state or free. But I guess you can’t always compromise and the country had compromised too much and all the compromises before were the cause of the Civil War.

It is clear that the south and the north had opposing viewpoints when it came to slavery. This disagreement was a monumental part of the Civil War. We can see this in many effects on the link in the chain that leads up to the Civil War. The Missouri Compromise, the Three-fifths Compromise, and The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 are all links in the chain. If we follow it even farther back, we can see that all these things are merely effects of the origin of slavery in the United States.
“If there would be a single event that caused the Civil War, it would be the establishment of the United States from Britain with slavery still a part of its heritage.”

There were a lot of contributing factors that foreshadowed the oncoming of a war further back than most people look, but the main causes are…

-The separation of unity that the state and federal rights showed

-The establishment of the independence from England

-Fights between the slave and non-slave states such as the compromise of 1850 and Bleeding Kansas

-The growth of the Abolition Movement. This included the Dred Scott case, the fugitive slave act, and even the publishing of Uncle tom’s cabin

-Views and economic differences between the north and south such as the want for tariffs and the need to sell cotton; thus needing slaves

-The election of Honest Abe for president.

All of these were just some of the factors. There were other events that may not have been as major but still gave the escalating issues and extra spark.

2. At this point in all of our reading, writing, talking, sharing, and studying, what do YOU think could be considered a cause of the Civil War?

I think that the cause of the Civil War was the inability to agree on policies and the stubborness between the North and South. I think that most of the disagreements were about slavery and how to settle it. In the end they just could not come up with something that would satisfy both sides. They both felt too strongly about their ideas to not get in so many arguments and ultimately a war.

I would say that a cause of the civi war was the United States lack og compromise. It was the inability to agree between the North and South. I think a majority of the dissagreements were on slavery in some sort of way. The south thought they needed slavery and would not budge. The North were so strongly against slavery.

I think the Civil war was caused because we never truly delt with slavery and didn’t compromise the problem. Instead we just left it until it grew into a war. After reading all the articles and watching this media I now see how the south needed slaves and their labor. I wonder why they couldn’t have compromised like they did in the past and turned the south towards industrial instead.

1. What did you see or hear in the documentary that we read about in the articles?
They talked about the Kansas-Nebraska Act somewhat and actually referred a lot to Kansas, Bleeding Kansas. The documentary pointed out how the South was worried about the North’s economy growing and the south and north being divided in general.

2. At this point in all of our reading, writing, talking, sharing, and studying, what do YOU think could be considered a cause of the Civil War?

I think that the Civil war was caused off of the fact that everyone was so opinionated on slavery. Some thought (northern states) that slavery was a sin; no one should believe nor follow the act of slavery. And there were others (southern states) that believed slavery was a necessary practice and allowed it. With these two worldviews at hand, there would be disagreement on the topic and when it’s a topic really important like slavery, it’s going to cause drastic measures. Also, because the topic at hand was so important, it was hard to find a middle ground between allowing and forbidding slavery. At this point, the north and south thought the only way to get their opinion out was to have a war. Also, the word civil means – of, pertaining to, or containing citizens – so holding a Civil war would mean fighting for the right of citizens which is where the worldviews come back into play.

Many people that lived in America needed to grow crops in order to make any money for themselves and for their families. The people that were wealthy believed that they didn't have to go out and do their own work and which begins the whole problem with slavery.
There was cases for both sides of the situation, some of them believed that slaves were needed for work besides blacks didn't have much of a life anyway but others thought the complete opposite about slavery... and that it was all wrong. I think slavery caused this war between people and sides. It was our fault in the first place, we went against each other because of our lazy efforts and seperated our nations.

1. I heard them talking about the Kansas-Nebraska act because I heard the mention, "bleeding Kansas", which was one of the main reasons the civil war happened. I also saw those collars with bells on them, that the slaves had to wear so they wouldn't escape.

2. I think the cause of the civil war was because of all of the disagreement with slaves. Because the south thought they were needed because they had a lot of land, and they made a fortune on crops and land, that they needed to be tended by someone. While the north had mostly factories, so it wasn't needed as much, because all of the machinery did the work for them.

I think that if we would have been able to have the text with us while watching, it would have been easier to make connections.

2. I think that there is a large chain of events that led to the civil war like:

-The separation and unity of terrtories due to land ordanices.

-Fights between the slave and non-slave states like the compromise of 1850 (missouri comprmise) and Bleeding Kansas

-Different views on needs and wants. As the cotton industry grew, the demand for slaves increased.

-When Lincoln was running for president.

But I believe that the main cause was simply slavery.

In the video I heard them talk about the Bull Run which was one of the first events of the civil war. I also heard them talk about “Bleeding Kansas” and they shared a lot of the same information we read about in the Kansas Nebraska Act. I also head about Dred Scott article, and what we discussed in that article too. They discussed about and argument between the north and the south about what free and slaves states and its related to the Missouri Compromise and how in that article that were talking about the free and slave states being equal.
2. At this point in all of our reading, writing, talking, sharing, and studying, what do YOU think could be considered a cause of the Civil War?
I think that the main cause of the civil war was the great diversity between the north and the south. The people in the north believed that they didn’t need slaves to do their work and the southern states had slaves doing their work and that created arguments about believes and then started more arguments. A lot of people in America had farms and that’s how they made their money and the people who owned slaves didn’t feel like they should do the work for their money and the people in the north took care of their farms without slaves. They had different world views and instead of compromising them the civil war began.

We heard about the Dred Scott case, Bleeding Kansas, The Kansas Nebraska Act this is it but these were just titles we heard mentioned or discussed in the video. The text was much more important to hear then just the titles of the articles we read. I also personally had a hard time making connections during the video because there wasn’t enough time to reflect. I also heard the quotes you put in Think Spot.
2. At this point in all of our reading, writing, talking, sharing, and studying, what do YOU think could be considered a cause of the Civil War?
The cause of the civil war through my eyes is just how non-unified and disagreeable we were as a country. The things that I think may have lead up to and be the cause of the civil war was fights between the slave and non-slave states such as the compromise of 1850 and Bleeding Kansas. All the important causes of the civil war we read about in the articles and conceptually annotated. Another cause through my eyes is how much we valued cotton and needed to maintain our fields. We were too reliant on cotton and then when the Northerners said they wanted to slaves to be freed. The southerners were outraged because they were making too much money. I think money and aristocrats’ wanting more money is one of the other main somewhat forgotten causes of the civil war. It’s like gasoline now people are making too much money to stop. It’s like I’m making so much money and I can make more why should I stop and that was the view I believe pro-slavery had. All of these views are highly debatable.

I believe that the cause of the War was due to a lack of agreement and knolegde. Also the differnet wants of the North and THe south.

What did you see or hear in the documentary that we read about in the articles? Everything that we read about that had to do with the north and south hatting each other was in the documentary. What the documentary also did was told a little bit about how the slaves lived and how they got sold and that reminded me about how the slaves traveled in the boats and how they lived on them too.

At this point in all of our reading, writing, talking, sharing, and studying, what do YOU think could be considered a cause of the Civil War? There is not one cause that happened to lead up to the war. Usually there is not. But I think the big cause is where the slaves could be and where they couldn’t be. That is what separated the north from the south.

In this media I heard Dred scot, Bleeding Kansas, slavery, Kansas-Nebraska act, the presidency (Abraham Lincoln)

2. At this point in all of our reading, writing, talking, sharing, and studying, what do YOU think could be considered a cause of the Civil War?

I do not think that there was only one cause, or even a few. I believe that every difference between north and south on the issue of slavery led up to it, mainly the disestablishment of British power in the Americas was one issue because it put us in debt. The debt only made the war worse, the 3/5 compromise, also I believe the repel of the Missouri compromise also added. Slavery was the main issue though, it was just left to grow with being fixed, it was left in tell it started a war

Something that I heard in the documentary that we have read in an article is was about Bleeding Kansas where a few thousand pro-slavery people invading Kansas and killed a bunch of people.

I think the cause of the Civil War was that everyone was so opinionated on slavery. Slavery split America into the North and South, or non-slave and slave states. The North believed that slavery was immoral while the South believe that keeping slaves was just fine. These thoughts split America in two and eventually caused the Civil War.

1. Many of the topics our articles covered were discussed in the documentary. At the beginning of it, the idea of Westward Expansion was talked about briefly, mainly because of the conflict that arose everytime a territory wanted to become a state. Arguments formed over whether new states should be slave or free states, since the decision could upset the balance of power in the Senate. One of the most controversial events concerning this topic was "Bleeding Kansas", which was what one of our articles focused on. I heard this discussed in the documentary, along with important happenings in government, such as the Dred Scott Decision, another thing we read about. Major pre-Civil war topics in government such as the Missouri Compromise and Compromise of 1850 were also mentioned.

2. I think that there were many factors that led to the Civil War, some dating back to the late eighteenth century. The cause that I think was the biggest was the broad differences or sectionalism between the North and South, that started very early in our country's history. The two regions had opposing moral, social, political and economic views. Northereners believed slavery was unneeded and a sin, while Southerners thought it was a nessecary institution that was religiously supported. The North was primarily made up of Know-Nothings, Whigs, Abolitionists, and later, Republicans. In the South, the Democratic party was strong. And the most dramatic difference was how the two regions' economies worked. The South was based agriculture and farming, where slaves provided the labor. And the North was based on factory work and manufacturing. These difference supported the ideas of seccesion, and I think is what made the two regions go to war in the Civil War.

1. Something that I saw in the movie that was also in the articles was Robert E. Lee and Bleeding Kansas.

2. People had many conflicting views on slavery and what was right. Some people believed that slavery was wrong, though necessary.Others thought that it was both wrong and unnecessary. I think that all of these conflicting views were the beginning cause of the war.

In the documentary I heard them talking about Bleeding Kansas and Dred Scott. One thing that could've caused the Civil War could have been because slavery has always been apart of their heritage and they brought it over from England.

1. What did you see or hear in the documentary that we read about in the articles?
I heard the narrator talk about bleeding Kansas and how it went on for a long time and what the proslavery-ites destroyed and who they killed and why. As well as the slave that sued his owners wife for his freedom but couldn’t.

2. At this point in all of our reading, writing, talking, sharing, and studying, what do YOU think could be considered a cause of the Civil War?
I think that a cause of the civil war was because after we declared or independence from England we kept slavery.
Also Slavery in general it split our countries opinions and then our countries.

1. Some stuffs that I saw in the movie, where related to articles, where "Bleeding Kansas" and Robert E. Lee.

2. The Bigotry between the north and the south. Some of northerners thought slavery was wrong, while useful. Others thought the slave trade, should just be abolished. No matter where you look for the "Cause" of the civil war, it will always have a route to slavery. Slavery, isn't the direct cause, but opened doors for other opposing views.

2. Some people in the north thought that the slaves were super wrong but probably only because they didnt really need. I think that the south saw them as a need not a want. The cause of the civil war was the disagrement of the slave problem.
