Day 2: Central Ideas & Central Messages...

Happy Tuesday Y'all,

Today is Tuesday, January 12, 2016.  Yesterday we took a crack at identifying a CENTRAL IDEA and a CENTRAL MESSAGE for our book Of Beetles & Angels.  Today, we are going to take it a step further.  The central idea is sometimes stated by the author, relates directly to the main events, and can include characters from the story.  The central message on the other hand is more like a moral of the story.  It is a general statement or lesson that can be said about life as a whole.

Basically, when we think of analyzing text, we think of analyzing 3 things.  First, we look for MAIN EVENTS that happen in the story.  Second, we look for patterns that keep coming up in the text.  These patterns will lead us to the authors CENTRAL  IDEA.  Finally, after looking at the central idea, we can determine the CENTRAL MESSAGE.  Remember, a central message is more like a moral of the story.

The learning target that goes along with is the one and only reading standard 2 for 7th grade (R.7.2).  This asks learners, like yourselves, to determine the central idea or theme of a text.  Our work today will be to post our thoughts about the central idea and the central message after we have finished our reading in the chat rooms from yesterday.  Below, you will find the links from yesterday.  Good luck and happy hunting!
