Elements of Fiction: Plot & Theme...

Happy Tuesday Kenosha Kiddies,

Today is Tuesday, October 25, 2016. We just finished our assessment on story elements in fictional narratives. It was important to learn about story elements because we are starting our first novel Esperanza Rising. So far, we have been reading a couple chapters in another book called The Night Gardner. Story elements are present in both novels.  When it comes to plot we know that the five parts are exposition, conflict, climax, falling action, and resolution (dénouement). Within exposition we get introduced to the setting and characters. Within the rising action we get introduced to the conflict or, in other words, the complication and the crisis. Once we have reached this part in a story, we are set up as readers to watch the story unfold. In a short story like Duffy's Jacket or Ricky Tikki Tavi story elements happen quickly or in short spaces of time. In longer stories or novels like Esperanza Rising or The Night Gardner things like exposition, rising action,  and conflict are stretched across multiple chapters. This changes how we analyze novels compared to how we analyze short stories. When we read novels or longer texts we have to look for clues along the way. Today I'm going to try my best to show you what these clues are.

Conflict, complication, and crises can make a complex story very interesting to read. Writers and authors leave us clues to figure out part of conflict on our own. Clues that writers use come in the form of patterns and character traits. Characters behave in certain ways just like real life people do. Also, when things in the story or plot happen multiple times, those are patterns in the text. The way characters behave and patterns in the text tell us as readers what the conflict could be and what the theme could be.

Love, peace, and taco grease,
Mr. C

P.S. I bet you thought that I had forgotten the Vsauce of the week.  Not!
