Yet Another Happy Monday: The Outsiders, Signposts, and The 1960's...

Another Happy Monday Y'all,

Image result for Mind Field - Isolation      Today is Monday, January 30, 2017.  This week will look a lot like last week in that you will have a sub this Thursday and Friday.  The days that I will be out this week are the last days of my paternity leave for the baby.  Things will return to normal starting next week.  As for the last week, I hope you all enjoyed the beginning chapters of our book The Outsiders.  We are now in a great position to analyze what we have read from last week.  It was also my hope that you engaged in attentive & active listening when watching those documentaries is Social Studies.  I hope you walked away with a better understanding of some of the conflicts within the Persian Wars.  If we can begin to understand Marathon and Thermopylae, then we can begin to understand the conflict as well as Greek civilization as a whole.  The reasons why people fight can tell us a lot about a civilization.

This week, with our time together, we will be focusing on a few things.  First, we will be spending a lot of time reviewing, revisiting, and reflecting on the 6 Signposts.  Second, I am dying to show you the movie version of The Outsiders.  Both the book and the movie are so good and in some ways for different reasons.  As a reader, I have always loved to see movie versions of the books I read.  From Lord of the Rings to Harry Potter, the movie version of the novels provide me with a guide to help visualize what the author really wanted me to see.  I hope by watching and reading you too can visualize what the author wants you to see.  Third, we will start a small project that is designed to get us thinking about the setting of our novel. The Outsiders takes place in the 1960's.  The inquiry that we will be engaging will help us understand what life was like when this story took place.

Below you will see the RAFTS prompt for the week.  I'd like you to spend some time thinking about your relationship with the text you are reading.  What do you remember from the book The Outsiders?  Do you like or dislike the story so far and why?  If you were going to summarize the book to someone, what would you be sure to mention?  Now that we have a firm grasp of our day and our week together, it's time for me to unveil a shift in our Vsauce experience together.  You all know my favorite Youtube Channel is Vsauce.  You also know that Michael Stevens is the creator and host of Vsauce.  Well, it turns out that Michael Stevens has been part of creating a new Youtube series called Mind Field.  I have only seen one episode so far, but IT IS AWESOME!!!  I can't wait to share it with you guys and girls. We will start by watching part of the episode called Mind Field: Isolation.  It is my hope that this new series will not only get us talking to one another, but also improving some of our advisory time as wellAs we kick off another week together, have fun and enjoy!

P.S. Always remember, the task is not to see what no one has yet seen but to think what nobody has yet thought about that which everybody sees.
