Philosophical Chairs: Day 2...

What's up Debaters!?

All your teachers could not be more impressed by all of you!  From the students who had a chance to speak there voice to the students who did not get a chance to speak, all of you handled yourselves well.  It seems to me you all are natural debaters.

Here are your learning targets again for the day.  Please look them over and think of a few ideas as to how we hit those yesterday and how we will hit them today.  Come to circle with 2 ideas.
Learning Targets:
I can make informed judgements about media.
I can prepare for and engage in collaborative discussions (large group, small group or partner), clearly expressing my own ideas and building on others’ ideas.
I can sort out relevant information from irrelevant information in written text and in information presented orally.

Now, down to brass tacks.  I took notes yesterday and made many observations in all three CORE classes.  I posted my notes on blackboard if anyone is interested in seeing those.  Although each CORE had a different experience, here were some common questions:

1. Is there a topic that you would like to revisit?
2. Are there any topics that have not been discussed that you feel need to be discussed?
3. Is there a topic you would be interested in doing additional research to discover additional information?
4. Was there anything that was brought forth during debate that you would like to have a chance to rebuttal now?
5. Is there a debate topic you can think of on your own that you would like to add to the list?
Below are the topics for you to see and follow along:

·       STEM Academy should facilitate modules as opposed to direct instruction to encourage the development of self0directed learning and the understanding of concepts.
·       Organ donation should be compulsory for all United States citizens
·       The public's right to know is more important than the privacy of celebrities
·       September 11 should be made a national holiday
·       Middle schools should not have promotion ceremonies
·       Schools should be year round
·       Zoos do more good than harm
·       The United States government should provide free healthcare for all U.S. citizens
·       The United States should significantly expand its use of nuclear power
·       Beauty pageants do more good than harm
·       All Americans should be required to provide one year of national service
·       College athletes should be paid
·       To combat obesity, the government is always looking at policies to encourage people to eat healthier foods while cutting out fatty and sugary items, but what about the idea of food taxes on certain goods?

·       Should Americans carry an identity card with them at all times or is this and invasion of privacy?

·       Should the U.S. government continue to aid other countries or help our own?

·       Should High Schools offer alternate training for those who do not intend on going to college instead of the same education?

Welcome to round two of Philosophical Chairs.  Remember paraphrasing: Ethos.  Remember thoughtful reflection: Pathos.  Remember textual evidence as well: Logos.

Sincerely,
C

I would really like to debate on Universal Healthcare. I think it would be very interesting to see the different viewpoints. One think that I think went well yesterday was how we had a diversity of opinions, and we didn't get too emotional.

I felt like a lot of the same people were talking yesterday. I also felt like there were many people who raised their hands, but didn't get a chance to speak.

Instead of having pre-selected topics to debate about, I think it might be a good learning experience for the class to search for and choose our own topics to discuss and debate about. Or another option would be to vote on a group of topics, and only debate the most popular one, but for a longer period of time.

Beth-
I liked the way the debate was done yesterday, overall. One thing I might change was the repetition of the same statements. I found it unfair for three people to restate the same thing, but there were others who were not able to speak. This could be resolved by better listening from participants.

Mr. C, I think that we had a good sicussion yesterday but we didn't all get a chance to talk on every subject we wanted to. I propose that we split the class into 2 circles so we all get more time to voice our opinions. I also think that we should discuss more interesting topics that really appy to real world, yesterday's only good topic was the learning modules and the organ donation. Also we shouldn't be repremanded for voicing our opions because it makes you feel like this isn't a real debate, it is just a teacher directing us on what to say.

I think that something we should discuss in class is, should we have had to learn a foreign language at younger ages? I liked how yesterday went and hope it is as fun today as it was then. More people should raise their hands, and people should call on people that are not their best friends.

I thought that everyone was following the learning targets yesterday. Everyone who spoke was able to find the relevent and irrelevent information about the discussed topics. Almost everyone who spoke did a very good job of this. I think a topic I would like to revisit would be the STEM school using modules instead of teachers because I didn't think it was completely sorted out.

I thought that yesterday went well and I enjoyed the activity. I think to improve it today we really have to pay attention to the board and make sure that everyone's voice is heard. I think that we should also make the circle bigger so that people are not in the corner. People in the corner often did not get their voice heard.

I really enjoyed the activity yesterday. I made me fell like those who didn't get a chance to speak were still heard becasue of the 'side' the were sitting on. The still got to express their opinion in a way. I think everyone found a mature, respectful way to voice their opinion to complete a sucessful activity.

I think that yesterday went very well. I think that this taught how a debate could really go. I will be more willing to put out my opinion today after watching yesterday. I think that we should get to pick the topics we think are the most interesting and would make for a good debate.

Yesterday was a very interesting and fun way to learn and to strengthen our debating skills. We talked about a wide range of topics that I liked, although I would want to talk about Abortion or Universal Healthcare. One thing that I didnt like was the some people got to talk 4-5 times while others were restricted to 1-2. This also meets one of the learning targets by preparing to engage in collaborative discussion by having notes.

hello,
this is Rob and i would like to comment that the philosophical chair activity went well yesterday. although i strongly believe that once a man hath reached their quota of interjections they should take a reprieve from showing their opinions until everyone else has reached a sufficient number of comments.
sincerely,
Rob

I really liked doing this activity yesterday. It allowed me to share my personal thoughts and feelings while also backing them up with fact. I like being in the position where I have to take things from my schema at any given time. It really got everyone thinking and was a great thing to do to prepare to begin debating. I am looking forward to doing it today.

Yesterday, I thought I met the second learning target because I came to class with ideas and notes on two of the topics. It thought yesterday went well and I liked being able to speak my mind. It was great how mostly everyone who raised their hand got a chance to speak. It was great to hear everyones opinion!

Emilie said...

I think that the debate went really well. I think that we would be able to hear a lot more of people's opinions if we had two smaller groups.I think by doing this we will get to have the opportunity to hear other's piont of view.

In my opinion yesterday went well overall. However there were a lot of people that didn't get the chance to speak, either because of the limited time we had for each topic or because they weren't called on.To the people that did get to speak, it was nice to hear so many different perspectives.

Autumn said...

I felt like mostly the same people were talking and people would call on their friends to go next. Therefore, someone who really wanted to say something couldn't. What I did like is that everyone stayed on topic and really voiced their opinions.

Ami Leigh said...

I think the overall discussion yesteday was very productive, in that everyone expressed their opinions strongly but mostly keeping in mind other people's feelings. Something I that would make philosophical chairs a little bit easier, is maybe to not have to choose someone from a different section of the 'horseshoe.'

Emily R. said...

I've already posted one comment but I would also like to include that I think splitting the class into 2 different discussions would allow more people to talk. I also don't want to deal with that many opinons at once and it would be easier to have an in-depth discussion.

Shawn Ge said...

I feel that this activity was a great experience overall, but i wish that we could find a way so that not the same people are always talking. I thought maybe having the teacher pick, since the teacher would pick the students that haven't been talking with their hand up. I also want more time for each discussion; I feel that we're always left with many thoughts unsaid at the end of the seminar that might've been worthwhile to hear.

Jason said...

I think that the activity yesterday was done well. The only thing I would change is that I could get a chance to speak because I might have so good view points someone else might not have.

Alexandra said...

I think that yesterday went very well. But it might be better if we split into two smaller groups so everyone has a chance to speak.

I think it would be nice to choose the topics to debate about. Some topics I have an opinion about butmost of them I don't have an opinion and I'm not that interested in.

Keegan Ehler said...

I think something we can improve upon is the fact that we have to pick someone else from another part of the horseshoe, because some people have burning questions and then they may forget them. I think we should be able to pick anyone from any part of the horseshoe.

I think that the debate went well yesterday and I had a very enjoyable experience! I think the paraphasing was nice for a couple reasons.
1) If someone wasn't paying attention they wouldn't be able to paraphrase, which will be shown in their paraphrase
2) It builds ethos if you can show that you were paying attention and understanding if you can accurately paraphrase.

I think it would be interesting if we debated whether we should paraphrase or not.

I think that we had some pretty good discussions yesterday and felt like the thigs that were being said we on task and we took it pretty seriously. There were definetly strong viewpoints about all of the topics and it was interesting to see that there were things changing peoples minds. As for the learning targets, From where i was they were all being fufilled. The only thing i wish was a bit more say in the topics and a way to get more people in the conversation. It definetly would have made the discussion more interstiong if we could hear more view points.

Kristjan said...

Two topics that i think that we should go over that would be good debate about is if abortion should be legal and also if the pledge should be said because some kids have a different religion

Yesterday i liked that you didnt have to talk but you could just listen and you could also use your resources like your netbook to help you. I didnt like how people took over and talked 4-5 times and some people talked once or not at all.

I really liked yesterdays collaboration but I noticed that opinions were sent multiple times in a row. Maybe if someone had the same idea as another they could just raise their hand to signify "I think so as well".

Colin Gilgenbach said...

I think that everyone in the discussion was engaged, and were at least thinking even if they didn't get a chance to speak

Hannah Jo Banana Hansen said...

I think it would be better if we had one person who agreed with a statement and one who didn't and they debated one on one, and they had way more time.

Amanda Grove said...

I think that we should have an argument on what we are doing every day. also this is a new idea to do this. also we need our own email to comment on the blog.

I think that we should have a debate topic on the enviornment and what more should be done to conserve it. This is a very importnant topic to discuss becuase the enviornment is eveything to us, we get our resources from the enviornment so if it is not conserved we can not get our resources.

Could we start doing debates everymonth??? I think that it would be kind of fun to do! and work on our debating skills...

Karin said...

I think the debate was a lot of fun yesterday. Except for the fact that some people didn't get to speak because the same person/ people were continuously talking, and not calling on others.

people who earn 100000 dollars or more a year should pay a tax that earns money for others helth care, along with paying there own. people who earn 10000 to 100000 dollars a year should only pay there own health care, and people who earn 10000 dollars or less a year will be the reciving end of the "privleged peoples" tax.
