Agriculture In Mesopotamia: Agriculture and Civilization...

Happy Friday Kids of Kenosha,

Today is Friday, October 16, 2015.  What made civilization possible in Mesopotamia?  We have been watching VIDEO MEDIA to answer this question and learn a new strategy called Two Column Notes.  Yesterday, during an academic period, Isaiah made a great observation.  He called Two Column Notes by a different name.  He said it was TWO COLUMN THINKING.  I love it!!

Two Column Thinking is our way of making information in videos usable information.  Today, we are going to try to use the information we recorded in our Two Column Thinking to better understand what we have watched.  Here is the video we have watched so far:

WHAT MADE CIVILIZATION POSSIBLE IN MESOPOTAMIA?

As we have watched we have tried to find information that answers an essential question.  The question is posted above the video.  All of the answers can be found in the first 5 minutes of the video.  We have recorded all of this information and we have re-watched the video multiple times.  Your mission, is to post the answer to this question in the comments below.  Also, respond to a comment someone else has posted.  Good luck and happy hunting.

Love, peace, and taco grease,
Mr. C

@ Lee Taylor,

Hey buddy. There are 2 geographical reasons and 2 man-made reasons why agriculture was successful in Mesopotamia. And remember, the question is what made civilization possible in Mesopotamia?

Mr. C

Evelina said...

Agriculture was successful because Mesopotamia had very fertile soil. The mountains and rivers created the fertile soil. Mesopotamia lies between the Euphrates river and the Tigris. When the snow from the mountains melt they flow to the rivers and flood the valleys that wash up very fertile soil. But the floods can also ruin the crops so the People of Mesopotamia created levees and plows. They were the first man made irrigation tools. So that way when there's too much water it will not flood the crops and if there is too little water the crops won't die out.
Agriculture was the start of civilization. By working together on farming people started to group together and began a civilization.

What made civilization possible in Mesopotamia, well it was the mountains and the river valley that were a big factor the mountains would get snow in the winter and in the summer it would melt. The water from the mountain would flow down into the rivers, the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers. Then that water would flood the valley and leave nice fertile dirt for the crops to grow in. The people living there build levees to help control the river, sometimes their crops would die because there was not enough water and other times the valley would flood and their crops would die from too much water, so they built levees to provide water to their crops when the needed it and keep water out when they did not need it. They also used ox to help turn the dirt so they could plant crops easier.

The land was in between two rivers. The snow on the mountains melted and brought fertile soil and good water to grow crops.
They built levees. They built plows. (I think that’s how you spell it)
and……...Agriculture << im a rebel.

What made civilization possible in Mesopotamia was that they used Domestication. They domesticated cows, sheep, etc. They also farmed. When the it snows on the mountains, the snow falls down and then it turns into water. Then the water would flow down into the rivers (the Tigris and the Euphrates) and it would flood. Because of the rivers flooding, it would carry great soil for farming. So in the summertime, when there wasn’t enough water, they would use man-made levees. These levees would have gates so when the crops needed water, they would open the gates and the water would flow in. To make the earth a bit more easier to put crops in, they would use a plow to turn over the dirt and soil by having oxen pull it. This means that they could just stay in one place and grow to make civilizations and possibly become empires.

Agriculture made civilization possible because it gave them lots of food so nobody would go hungry. They domesticated animals to give them meat and things like wool or cheese. The invented things like plows and levees to help with the farming. Food production was really good there because the mountains flooded and brought really fertile soil to the land. Mesopotamia laid between two rivers so when the ice on the mountain melted it flooded the rivers making the good soil come.

2 man -made reasons)1. Domesticating sheep and goats for milk and food.
2. Learning how to make levees to channel the water for the crops so they would not flood the crops and rip them up from the ground.

2 Geographical reasons) 1. Mesopotamia was a fertile valley bordered by two rivers called the Tigris river and the Euphrates river .
2. The mountains during the winter would get a lot of snow and when it became spring the mountains snow would melt and run into the valley and into the Tigris and Euphrates river and flood the valleys.

Civilization was possible in Mesopotamia because of agriculture. Agriculture was possible because of the two man made and two geographical reasons. The first man made reason is the levees. Levees helped the people in Mesopotamia control the water so the rivers wouldn’t flood and ruin the crops. The second man made reason is the plows. The plows oxen pulled gave people enough power to to grind up the soil and keep it fresh. The first geographical reason is the two rivers, The Tigris and The Euphrates. The rivers kept the soil rich and hydrated. The second geographical reason is the mountains. The mountain snow melted and went into the soil making it rich and crop ready.

The clear reasons why civilization was so successful was the two rivers( Euphrates and Trigis)and the mountains. The mountains made the soil so fertile. When the snow on the mountains melted , the water would go into the river. Then the river would flood the valley and dump a lot of good soil. That’s why the soil is so fertile and why plants grow so well in Mesopotamia. But people back then didn’t know when a flood was going to happen, so they built Levees. Levees helped control the water, so that way if the early humans were growing crops, the water wouldn’t drown the crops in water. They also invented a tool that would help them with farming. That tool is called the plow. They used cattle to pull the plow across the valley.

They no longer had to move with herds they could now just settle down and make permanent homes and have more kids and bigger families.

(geographical) 1. When the snow melts off the mountains the water would flood down and water and water the soil/plants.
2. They grew /planted levees which was a good resource for them

(man-made) 1. They plowed the soil so that the plants can grow healthy, also they lived near 2 rivers that had a good growing area.
2. They tamed wild goats and sheep for food and milk.

PS:Agriculture,Domestication, and Forage.

Emily-
Agriculture was a very important link in the civilization of Mesopotamia, and in our time too. Agriculture was the thing that let the people stop moving and start just living in one place. As they could grow their own food, it made it possible to stay. But things in the environment made agriculture possible in the first place. The reasons for agriculture starts with the fact that mesopotamia was in between two rivers, the Tigris and the Euphrates. The mountains were also a very important as they fed the rivers and gave the land fresh, fertile soil. It was called the Fertile crescent because it was so good for farming. A man made reason may be that they were the first to discover that you could make a way to get water to the plants via groves in the ground, fed by the river. Without it, we would still be having a hard time with farming, this new method made farming a whole lot easier. They had a way of controlling the water. A rize mound of dirt that would keep the water in its own space and prevent floods that would wash away the plants. This thing was called a levee. A second fact would be the new knowledge of domestication. The humans started to tame wild animals and plants to be more effective to them in the long run. Both nature and humans had a hand in the making of agriculture, and it is still one of the most important things in our lives today. Another may be the plow, which was the thing that helped harvest and control the plants, so to not have to do everything by hand.

The reason that civilisation was posible was because of domestiaction.
Domestication was so important because they could get milk and all kinds of meat and they would train animals to pull plows and things like that and agriculter was also inportant because the people would not have to move as much.

What made civilization possible in
mesopotamia?

It was the mountains and the rivers valleys. The mountains get snow in the winter and in summer the snow melts. The water (the snow that is melting) would flow down to the river at the bottom. The tigris and the Euphrates rivers which when the water flows down it make fertile dirt for some crop/plants to grow. The flood of the rivers will make some of the crops die so the people of mesopotamia created levees and the plows. They were the first man made irrigation tools. So when the rivers flood the crops will not flood and when the crops get a little bit of water they wont die out. Agriculture was the start of civilization. The people started to work in a group together and began civilization.

So they can stay in one place and don't have to move around and still have food
What makes successful agriculture in Mesopotamia was Man Made Reasons like
Levees which made their lands not floud because of all the water coming from the and mountains Plows which was this thing that they created and it was on the cows and animals back and they carry it through the soil to make lines for the people to plant. Geographical Reasons like Rivers because it gave them water and Mountains because when all the snow melted the water that came from the snow came down the mountain and the dirt it went over gave it water for the soil.

Agriculture was successful because of fertile soil. The rivers and the mountains made the soil fertile. Mesopotamia is between 2 rivers the Tigris and the Euphrates. When snow from the mountains melts it floods the river and it brings very fertile soil to the land. But because of the floods, the crops sometimes became flooded too. To help not have the crops be flooded the created levees to help control the water. The also made plows to help with the crops. Those were the first irrigation tools they used in Mesopotamia.

Agriculture was the started of civilization. People started to work to gather and start civilization.

Agriculture.
What made agriculture possible in Mesoptamia?
The snow from the mountains made the river bigger and that made the soil nice and good so the crop can grow.
The tiger and The euphraties are the rivers.
Mesoptamia mean the land inbetween rivers.

What made civilization possible in
in mesopotamia ?
The people had discovered that they could grow and plant wheat and other types of plants {AGRICULTURE} where they were living. The people also learned how to hunt and gather which meant they knew how to gather herds of animals like horses and sheep which they would call {DOMESTICATION} from what they were able to get from them were like {WOOL AND CHEESE OR MEAT}.
2 Geographical Reasons
1.Mesopotamia was a very fertile valley and had very fertile soil because they lived in between the two rivers called {EUPHRATES AND THE TIGRIS}.
2.In winter the mountains would get alot of snow and when it had become spring all of the snow would melt and run into the valley and the two rivers which would make the valley flood.
2 Man-Made Reasons
1.The people would domesticate sheep and goats for milk and food they could of also gotten wool from the sheep.
2.They would also learn how to make levees to channel the water for the crops so they would not flood the crops and rip them up from the ground.

They discovered that they could grow and plant wheat and other plants where they lived. They also learned how to gather animal herds of horses and sheep also known as agriculture. So that meant they didn't need to hunt or travel for food anymore the people from Mesopotamia call that domestication.

Two geographical reasons why agriculture was so successful in Mesopotamia was because they had very fertile soil another reason is because they lived between two rivers the Euphrates River and the Tigris River.

The people from Mesopotamia created plows to plow the soil and make it healthy.
They also made levees to make sure it wouldn't flood and won't die out.

Brady L said...

Domestication made it possible to get food without moving. The Tigris and Euphrates River give water as well as the Mountains above to help grow plants. Levees made it possible to choose when you want water to flow through to the crops. Plows helped plant food better and do it more efficiently.

Agriculture made civilization possible because it let them not have to hunt for food, they could just stay in one spot. They settled in the Fertile Crescent were the soil was perfect for farming. The reason was because of two geographical features. One were the two rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates. The second was the mountains. The mountains were covered with snow, so when it melted, it would overflow to rivers and would water to soil. Then they found out how to control the flow of water with levees. They also made plows to help loosen the soil for the plants to grow. Agriculture helped a lot to make civilization possible.

Michael Antonacci said...

Agriculture because in Mesopotamia the soil is fertile. That is because when it snows in the mountains the water goes down the mountains and into the soil to make it fertile. Mesopotamia is a river valley that made the ground. The levees control the river so when the crops need water they open it up. They use use a plow to turn the fertile soil.

The things that made civilization possible is because of the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, making agriculture possible. They built walls / levees to control the rivers flow, and when the snow on the mountains melted, the water over flowed the rivers and they opened the gates and let the water in to make the land fertile, they plant the seeds using oxen to pull something called a plow. ~Jack

What made civilization possible in Mesopotamia?
There was two geographical and two man made reasons on why civilization was possible in Mesopotamia. The two geographical reasons that civilization was possible in Mesopotamia were the Zagros Mountains
and the two rivers Euphrates and Tigris. The snow off of the mountain would melt, causing it to flow into the river, which caused it to overflow. The overflow would destroy all of the pants and crops that they had planted. That lead to the first man made structure which is something called a levee. Levees are places to store the overflow water so that they can control the flow of water given to the plants and crops. The second man made reason is something called a plow. They used animals to supply the plants and crops with fertilizer and other nutrience. Those are the reasons that civilization was possible in Mesopotamia.

Whenever they needed water they would remove the gates until they had enough water. They also used ox to help turn the soil. That made farming much easier.
